Hello.  I'm Cookie D-oh.  Welcome to my sparkly new blog.  After several years of waffling, I have decided to take the plunge.  Here I will be sharing my exploits in the kitchen.  Good and bad.  And there's plenty of bad.  But also some good.   Enjoy!

Hello!  I hope you and yours had a lovely Christmas!  We sure did!  And now that the flour and powdered sugar have settled, and the mess is (almost) cleaned up, here is a little recap of our days leading up to Christmas. First I decorated some more sugar cookies.  I copied the "Joy" idea from Sweet Sugar Belle , but hers were much better.  I forgot to decorate the letters.  And I was in a hurry.  I may have mentioned I went for simple this year?  It was because I needed to decorate a LOT of cookies, fast. So anyway, those were terrible.  I changed up the snowmen after the first run.  However, I made the change after I had already piped on the little hats.  I decided to do stick arms instead of snow arms.  But after I piped the modified body outlines for the snowmen with stick arms, I realized the hats were now waaaaay too big.  *sigh*  I'd be dangerous if I planned ahead. Turtle Birthday Cake

Ha!  Fooled you!  It's not a chocolate and caramel and pecan birthday cake. (Although that would be lovely, in my opinion.)  It's a cake shaped like a turtle!! Because that's what the boy wanted. I was actually quite happy with how it turned out. I got the idea off of Pinterest, of course. The design as a whole is a mash-up of two different cakes that I saw. I wanted to do more on the base cake, but I was literally finishing up the border as we walked out the door. My time management wasn't the best with this one. The square cake is two giant layers of lemon cake, torted, with two layers of home-made lemon curd filling and one layer of buttercream filling. It was gigantic. It stood almost 5 1/2 inches high (not including the turtle on top) and was incredible heavy. I should have weighed it. The turtle is a 6" round cake, vanilla-almond with buttercream filling. How to Make Sugared Lime Cupcake Toppers out of Fondant

Today I made sugared lime slices for some cupcakes I'll be doing later this week.  Of course, this being a baking blog, they are not made of lime.  They're fondant.  Here's a sneak peek at the finished product: They're a little wonky in the middle, but I think they're kind of cute.  I needed to make about four dozen, so I decided to use a technique I learned when I dabbled in polymer clay many years ago.  But then I had a baby.  And polymer clay fell by the wayside.  But then I discovered fondant.  Yay fondant! So here's how I did them: (Please excuse the awful photos.  I am a baker, not a photographer.) First, I colored fondant lime green (dark and light) and left some white.   If you try this you're going to need way more white and dark green than I have pictured.  Just sayin'.   I used Cake Craft Lime Green, but you can use whatever.  Americolor Electric Green is also lovely.
