Girls' Night Out Cookies

Image
I finally made some cookies!  But then I didn't take any pictures until they were all bagged up!  I rock!  Anyhoo, cookies for a girls' night out in red, pink, black, white and gold.  I made: Martinis (I'm not a martini drinker, so I don't know if the colors are realistic or not.)  I got the inspiration from a cookie out on the web, but now I can't remember who made the original.  :-( Diamond rings (The cookies were for a jewelry party, or I probably wouldn not have included the rings in this set.)  You can't tell, but the diamonds are sparkly.  Disco dust again. Party dresses This dress is my new favorite cutter. I don't know why I like this one so much.  It's just my favorite right now.  And lipstick, nail polish and hand mirrors Don't you just love the way the light bounces off the plastic?!  You can't see that the lipsticks have some black-on-black details. I painted all of the gold accents wi...

Ninja Birthday Cake

Image
True to my word, I have not baked anything this week.  So, what better way to pass the time than to post old birthday cakes?  Here is the cake I made for the boy last year.  He told me what he wanted and we designed it together.  He was really happy with it.  And I only got one picture.  With my phone.  Seems to be a trend with me.  The ninjas on the second tier were cut out using the infamous Ninjabread Men cutters.  The pagodas were hand-cut with an X-Acto knife.  The throwing stars are modified snowflakes on toothpicks, made of fondant with tylose powder added, dried and stuck into the cake. I thought that the stars would taste bad, but I must have been mistaken.  They ate them all. That's it for this cake. Enjoy!

DIY Birthday Cake for Kids

Image
The big day finally arrived.  The Boy's birthday party.  We had it at his martial arts facility.  It was great.  All we had to do was show up with the birthday boy and cake.  They did all the rest.  And if I hadn't felt like making cake, they would have supplied that as well.  Backstory:  (When you have kids, you'll find many things you do require an explanation.)  A month or so ago, I asked the boy what he wanted his cake to look like.  Usually, he is very specific.  This year, he said "Ninjas".  Well, last year it was ninjas, so I was all out of ideas.  But I thought about it for a while and eventually decided to do a black cake with black-clad ninja figures crawling up it.  Brilliant, huh?  And I would have been soooooo popular with all the other parents after their kids ate the black cake.  He changed his mind. He wanted a spy cake.  I said, "OK.  What does a...

These are my cookie cutters.  They are in ziploc bags in a plastic bin in my basement.  I need to find a better storage solution. *Linked to LilaLoa http://lilaloa.blogspot.com/

Birthday Cakes

Image
Well, I'm finally getting to post some of the birthday cakes from this week.  Yay!  First, here is the cake for my great aunt's 75th birthday.  It was fun, but next time I will use one large flower cutter, as opposed to cutting each petal individually.  It took a really.  long.  time. And here is where we get into the "D'oh!" part of the name.  I have already admitted that I'm a lousy photographer.  However, on this one I actually forgot to take any pictures.  This picture was taken with my phone in my grandma's basement.  (Hi Grandma!)  I have one better quality picture, but I can't bring myself to post it because the phone was crooked or something, and the cake looks like it's listing pretty severely to one side.  And it wasn't. I promise.  (However, you'll notice that right corner of the white tier is lower than the other corners.  Not really sure what happened there, and I'm not sure why I didn't notic...

Homemade Cake Release

Image
This is going to be a really exciting post!  Well, maybe not.  But it's all I've got right now.  I've been baking and baking, but then I've been wrapping my cakes in plastic and foil and tossing them into the freezer.  Why? Because I have a job and kids and in order to make cakes, I have to do them in stages.  So, for my great-aunt's birthday party on Sunday, I have been baking and freezing.  On Friday I'll take the cakes out of the freezer, fill them and let them settle.  On Saturday I will ice and decorate.  On Sunday the finished cake will be ready to go!  At least that's the plan. Anyhoo, I was getting ready to bake this morning and realized I was out of cake release.  I used to use grease and flour, which works just fine, but once I tried this stuff I was won over.  And since it's really easy to make, I whipped up a batch and took some pictures.  If you have never used homemade cake realease, you are missing out....

Valentine Owl Cookies

Image
I started thinking about what kind of cookies I was going to make for Valentine's Day a few weeks ago.  I didn't want anything too super-girly because I was going to send them to school with the boy for their Valentine's Day party.  Well, his teacher decided not to do a whole party this year.  They're going to make ice cream sundaes and exchange Valentines instead.  That took some pressure off of me, but I still wanted to make the cookies I had planned.  So I did. Just not as many as orignally anticipated.  And there is the finished product.  Owls!  I have seen owls all over the web lately.  I guess they're a big trend right now.  Most of the owl cookies I see are made using a tulip cutter.  Well, that's all well and good, but then the owls don't have tails.  And every owl I've ever seen has a tail.  So I flipped the tulip cutter upside down and cut a scoop out of the top.  Like so: That allowed me to make t...
