Chocolate Peppermint Christmas Cake

Image
Welcome back to the blog! I know it's been a while, but that just seems to be how it is these days. :-) I'm going to be teaching a baking class at my church in October, and I needed to decide early what I want to bake. We wanted something Christmas-y, since October is now (according to most American retailers) the beginning of the holiday season. After much vacillating, waffling, hemming and hawing, I decided on a chocolate cake with peppermint frosting. Because cake. I tried really hard to take better pictures this time. I'm pretty sure I failed, but the effort was there, I promise! I even went on the internet to see how other bloggers staged their cakes for photos. I went down to my basement and found a white plate! THAT is dedication right there. This is the same chocolate cake I always make because, really, it's the best. Start out by gathering your stuff. Here's some of the stuff you'll need. The first thing you'll do is to mix some boil...

Whimsical Decorated Christmas Cookies

Image
After my foray into non-traditional colors, I decided to go whimsical for the rest of the cookies this year. Pink, green and white. Not too wild and crazy, just a little different. I'm digging this snowman. Am I allowed to say that about my own cookies?  Because it's true. And finally a plaque cookie I don't hate. Simple but pretty. Well, I'm off to do more decorating! I actually took this past week off of work just to make cookies. I barely even left the house. Not much of a vacation, but I enjoyed myself. Well, that's all for now. Enjoy!

Gingerbread Men in a Forest Decorated Sugar Cookies

Image
You probably think I've finally lost my mind for real based on the title of this post.  But I haven't, I promise! Gingerbread men...in a forest! These are the cookies I made for the boy's Christmas party at school.  Since there are only four students in his class, I can go a little nuts with the cookies. And I've been wanting to try some 3-D cookies, so this was the perfect opportunity! I thought they came out kind of cute. That's all for now. Enjoy!

Non-Traditional Decorated Christmas Cookies

Image
I made a few batches of non-traditional Christmas cookies this year. Well, the shapes were traditional but the colors weren't.   Turquoise, yellow, gray and white. I'm going through a phase where I really like gray and yellow together.  And I ALWAYS love turquoise.  Trees... Snowflakes... And another tray... They were fun, but I'm back to slightly more traditional colors now.   That's all for now. Enjoy!

Reindeer Snowflake Decorated Sugar Cookies

Image
Well, Christmas Cookie season is in full swing here in the D-oh household. The first thing I did was enter a cookie exchange.  Here's a photo of my 9 1/2 dozen gingersnaps. I love gingersnaps. So after that I had to make more gingersnaps, because the cookie exchange used up my whole inventory. Then I made a whole bunch of other cookies.  And while I was making sugar cookies, I cut out some snowflakes using my spiffy new snowflake cutter. But the only thing I could think of while I was making the snowflakes was reindeer, because the snowflake looked like reindeer. See...reindeer.  Some I turned into Rudolph, and some I left generic. The noses are red hots (cinnamon imperials if you want to get technical) and the eyes are black sugar pearls. Super easy. Anyhoo, that's all for today. Enjoy!

Tackiest Christmas Cookies EVER!

Image
I've decided to embrace who I am. I am tacky. And I'm OK with that. Especially if it means I get to make Santa flamingos and lighted palm trees. The flamingos actually went through a bit of an evolutionary process.  They started like this: But they needed a little something extra, so I added the coat.  I was quite pleased with the result. Here's few more of the set. The very best ones were the last batch I decorated.  Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of those.  They were lovely.  Really.  The snowflakes, bulbs and presents were just what I was trying for.  I'm also a doofus and never get pictures of the really good cookies. But, in the spirit of a tacky Christmas, I am going against everything I believe in and I am posting a picture of myself on the blog.  I'm with my friend Mark, at work, shortly before the Tacky Christmas Sweater Contest. I am wearing the most awesome sweater in the whole.  wide.  world. It ...

Wow, it's been a while since my last post.  Sorry about that. I imagine I should have posted this BEFORE Christmas, but I've been so busy making cookies, I haven't had time to blog.  And since I did individual recipes last year, this year I'm just going to make a list.  Here we go! The Aftermath

Image
Hello!  I hope you and yours had a lovely Christmas!  We sure did!  And now that the flour and powdered sugar have settled, and the mess is (almost) cleaned up, here is a little recap of our days leading up to Christmas. First I decorated some more sugar cookies.  I copied the "Joy" idea from Sweet Sugar Belle , but hers were much better.  I forgot to decorate the letters.  And I was in a hurry.  I may have mentioned I went for simple this year?  It was because I needed to decorate a LOT of cookies, fast. So anyway, those were terrible.  I changed up the snowmen after the first run.  However, I made the change after I had already piped on the little hats.  I decided to do stick arms instead of snow arms.  But after I piped the modified body outlines for the snowmen with stick arms, I realized the hats were now waaaaay too big.  *sigh*  I'd be dangerous if I planned ahead. I almost forgot the gingerbread m...
