Hello.  I'm Cookie D-oh.  Welcome to my sparkly new blog.  After several years of waffling, I have decided to take the plunge.  Here I will be sharing my exploits in the kitchen.  Good and bad.  And there's plenty of bad.  But also some good.   Enjoy!

It's my first Blogiversary!  And to celebrate the completion of my first year as an official Blogger (can I add that to my resume now?), I am having a little giveaway.  Nothing much, just some fun cookie stuff I got at the local cake decorating store.  They have everything and I love them.  And they've been around for decades.  So they really know their stuff. I picked up some cookie cutters.  America, a hummingbird, a frog and a butterfly.  It has been really hard to let the last three go (if you read this blog with any regularity, you know I already have the America cutter), and I may have to go back for more cutters soon. Turtle Birthday Cake

Ha!  Fooled you!  It's not a chocolate and caramel and pecan birthday cake. (Although that would be lovely, in my opinion.)  It's a cake shaped like a turtle!! Because that's what the boy wanted. I was actually quite happy with how it turned out. I got the idea off of Pinterest, of course. The design as a whole is a mash-up of two different cakes that I saw. I wanted to do more on the base cake, but I was literally finishing up the border as we walked out the door. My time management wasn't the best with this one. The square cake is two giant layers of lemon cake, torted, with two layers of home-made lemon curd filling and one layer of buttercream filling. It was gigantic. It stood almost 5 1/2 inches high (not including the turtle on top) and was incredible heavy. I should have weighed it. The turtle is a 6" round cake, vanilla-almond with buttercream filling. How to Make Sugared Lime Cupcake Toppers out of Fondant

Today I made sugared lime slices for some cupcakes I'll be doing later this week.  Of course, this being a baking blog, they are not made of lime.  They're fondant.  Here's a sneak peek at the finished product: They're a little wonky in the middle, but I think they're kind of cute.  I needed to make about four dozen, so I decided to use a technique I learned when I dabbled in polymer clay many years ago.  But then I had a baby.  And polymer clay fell by the wayside.  But then I discovered fondant.  Yay fondant! So here's how I did them: (Please excuse the awful photos.  I am a baker, not a photographer.)
