Ninja Bread Men!

OK, these are old-ish, too.  We saw the Pioneer Woman feature these cutters on her blog back in 2010, and immediately ordered a set.  Because ninja are awesome.


To celebrate the boy getting his temporary black belt in Taekwondo, here are some ninja (remember, according to Lego Ninjago, "ninja" is both singular and plural).  I didn't think of making them for his class until it was too late.  D'oh!  They would have been so perfect.  But the instructors do get a plate full every Christmas, so they're getting used to them.






I've improved my technique since making these, but they're still super cute.  I mean, really, who doesn't love ninja?  (Except maybe samurai.)

    These are hilarious. I can see a boy totally loving these guys! And I know nothing about Ninja or Samurai, and they're enemies????? Who knew!

Turtle Birthday Cake

Ha!  Fooled you!  It's not a chocolate and caramel and pecan birthday cake. (Although that would be lovely, in my opinion.)  It's a cake shaped like a turtle!! Because that's what the boy wanted. I was actually quite happy with how it turned out. I got the idea off of Pinterest, of course. The design as a whole is a mash-up of two different cakes that I saw. I wanted to do more on the base cake, but I was literally finishing up the border as we walked out the door. My time management wasn't the best with this one. The square cake is two giant layers of lemon cake, torted, with two layers of home-made lemon curd filling and one layer of buttercream filling. It was gigantic. It stood almost 5 1/2 inches high (not including the turtle on top) and was incredible heavy. I should have weighed it. The turtle is a 6" round cake, vanilla-almond with buttercream filling. We served it at the party and then I took the rest to work on Monday. It was pretty good. I

Cross Country Cookies

 Hey, long time no blog! Life just keeps on happening, and that's the only excuse I have. The kids are growing up rapidly. The boy is in high school, and the girl is in middle school. Both of them run cross country, so I (finally) got around to making cookies for them. The school logo and some general cross-country themed cookies, along with a saying from their coach. And just so this isn't the world's shortest blog post, here's a picture of my vintage kitchen: It's a weird mix of 40's and 50's, but as I'm working off of Craig's List for my décor, it's the best I can do.  Well, that's all for now.  Enjoy!

Most Excellent Roll-Out Sugar Cookies

Why yes, I am a child of the 80's.  Why do you ask? It dawned on me recently that we've never made roll-out sugar cookies together here on the blog.  So let's get to it! Here are the ingredients we'll be using: I found vanilla bean paste at The Anderson's last week.  Go figure.  I also found rose extract.  Who knew The Anderson's had hard-to-find flavorings? Anyhoo, cream the butter and sugar until it's fluffy. In order to save time, while the sugar and butter are getting to know each other, I get the dry ingredients ready.  Mix them all together in a medium bowl and give it a good stir with a whisk. Add the sour cream, egg and vanilla (or vanilla bean paste in this case) to the butter and sugar. Just dump it all in.  Mix it well. I love the little specs of vanilla bean. Now dump in the dry ingredients. And stir until it's all incorporated. Looks kind of sticky and unmanageable, doesn't it?  Fear not, look
