Graffiti Birthday Cake

My friend brought me a picture of a cake and asked me to copy it for her nephew's birthday, so I can't take any credit for this design.  However, the picture did not say who made the original cake, so I can't credit the baker, either.  If anyone knows who did this cake originally, please let me know and I'll add a link/credit. 


The nephew is an aspiring rapper by the name of Jelani.  This was my first attempt at a tag, so it's not the greatest.  But I thought the record came out ok.


Of course, my handwriting is atrocious.  I blame being left-handed.  It's my cross to bear. 


Vanilla cake with strawberry filling.  The record is chocolate fondant (yum!) and the brick wall is vanilla fondant.  The record player arm is a mix of both, with straws internally for support.

    A turntable! I wanted to buy one to play the crates of albums I still own, and seriously, they are so expensive! I think your tagging is great, if you were really good at it, people may question your reckless youth! And really, it is its own art form...amazing art on the train cars here! I love this cake.

Turtle Birthday Cake

Ha!  Fooled you!  It's not a chocolate and caramel and pecan birthday cake. (Although that would be lovely, in my opinion.)  It's a cake shaped like a turtle!! Because that's what the boy wanted. I was actually quite happy with how it turned out. I got the idea off of Pinterest, of course. The design as a whole is a mash-up of two different cakes that I saw. I wanted to do more on the base cake, but I was literally finishing up the border as we walked out the door. My time management wasn't the best with this one. The square cake is two giant layers of lemon cake, torted, with two layers of home-made lemon curd filling and one layer of buttercream filling. It was gigantic. It stood almost 5 1/2 inches high (not including the turtle on top) and was incredible heavy. I should have weighed it. The turtle is a 6" round cake, vanilla-almond with buttercream filling. Cross Country Cookies

 Hey, long time no blog! Life just keeps on happening, and that's the only excuse I have. The kids are growing up rapidly. The boy is in high school, and the girl is in middle school. Both of them run cross country, so I (finally) got around to making cookies for them. The school logo and some general cross-country themed cookies, along with a saying from their coach. And just so this isn't the world's shortest blog post, here's a picture of my vintage kitchen: It's a weird mix of 40's and 50's, but as I'm working off of Craig's List for my décor, it's the best I can do.  Well, that's all for now.  Enjoy!

Happy Belated Independence Day Cookies!

So we've experienced a busy week.  The power was out for a few days...on the week we decided to play hookey from work...good times.  After the power came back on we took the kids to an amusement park, which was a hugely popular decision.  In the ensuing days we went to an historical farm, grilled out in the back yard, treated Daddy's sunburn, went to a parade, made popcorn and watched Goonies...it's been a fun-filled week. All that excitement meant that I was not anywhere near the computer for most of the week.  Which means I didn't post my 4th of July cookies.  So, without further ado, here they are!
